Finding everyday magic in a world that won’t slow down
It is Sunday, 4:43 a.m. as I write this. The home is still silent, save for the soothing hum of my coffee maker and the soft padding of our cat’s paws on the wooden floor. Something about these early morning hours makes my heart feel extra full, and I am more conscious of all the small blessings I normally overlook.
The Reluctant Convert
You know, I wasn’t always a “gratitude person.” I used to scoff at Instagram posts promoting gratitude journals and morning affirmations. Life seemed to revolve around completing tasks, marking achievements, and progressing forward. Who had the time to pause and reflect on their blessings?
The Breaking Point
Then came the year that shattered me.
It wasn’t one major event. Rather, it was a series of minor setbacks and disappointments that accumulated like autumn leaves until I felt buried beneath them. My dream job fell through. A close friendship dissolved. Health concerns kept me awake at night. Nothing tragic, just life doing its thing.
The Unexpected Teacher
And suddenly, just like this morning, something changed.
I was sitting at my kitchen table, feeling rather sorry for myself, when my elderly neighbor passed by my window. She was traveling slowly and using her cane, but she had a smile on her face as she knelt down (with great difficulty) to pick up a fallen maple leaf. She regarded it briefly, her smile widening, before carefully putting it into her pocket.
That vision brought me to a halt. Here was someone finding joy in a mere leaf while I sat indoors, clueless to the numerous bounties surrounding me.
Starting Small
That first day, I only scribbled down three things:
- Hot coffee ☕️
- A functional heater 🔥
- My favorite blue mug 💙
It seemed stupid at first, almost embarrassingly basic. But something weird happened as the days passed. The more I looked for reasons to be grateful, the more I discovered. It was like training my eyes to see in the dark; shapes appeared that I hadn’t noticed before.
The Growing List
I felt grateful for:
- My dog’s ears that feel like velvet
- Friends who text “Just thinking about you…”
- The particular tint of purple the sky turns right before sunset
- The sound of my mother’s giggle over the phone
- Clean sheets
- Those first sips of water when I’m extremely thirsty
- The gratifying ‘click’ of my front-door lock
The Transformation
But what astonished me the most was that appreciation transformed not only what I noticed but also how I dealt with life’s obstacles.
Bad days still happened (and always will), but they felt different. For example, last week, I experienced a flat tire in the midst of heavy rain. Rather than succumbing to a “why me?” mindset, I discovered a deep sense of gratitude:
- My phone had battery
- The compassionate stranger who stopped to help
- Having emergency finances to cover the repairs
- The comfortable café across from the tire shop where I could work while waiting
The Reality Check
This is not about toxic positivity or pretending everything is fine. Some days, my gratitude list looks like this:
- I survived today 💪
- I managed to brush my teeth
- The sun rose again
And you know what? These lists count too.
I’ve discovered that thankfulness isn’t about the magnitude of the blessing. It’s about the practice of noticing. It’s about training ourselves to pay attention. Even in our darkest periods, small lights can still flicker if we train our eyes to see them.
A Full Circle Moment
As I sit here now, watching the sun gently paint my kitchen walls golden, I’m grateful that you—yes, you—have taken the time to read these words. I’m thankful for the opportunity to share this journey and perhaps encourage you to start your own.
Begin small. Start where you are. Just start.
Because once you start seeking reasons to be grateful, life has a wonderful way of adding new ones to your list.
P.S. About that maple leaf my neighbor picked up? She placed it between two pages of her gratitude journal. She showed it to me over tea last week. Sometimes the best teachers emerge in the most unexpected ways.
I’m grateful for each and every one of you. Your presence here isn’t random; it’s part of our shared path of growing, healing, and learning to appreciate life’s small wonders. ✨
